Description: A -two day (1.2 CEU) course detailing the basic functions and typical procedures of a building department are outlined; and types of regulations, including zoning, planning, building codes, and local ordinances are presented. This class will assist in developing skills needed to process citizen requests, plan submittals, and over-the-counter permits. Whether you are experienced technical staff, a new inspector, or non-technical support staff, the 2-day Understanding Building Department Basics© course is essential for efficient operation of your department. The person who has first contact with the public and initiates the municipal permit process is critical to a project’s success. In assisting a citizen, contractor, developer, or architect, it is important that the building department staff understand the many functions of the building department.
Learning Objectives: Students successfully completing Building Department Basics will:
Discuss and examine the role of the person who has the first contact with the public, whether it be experienced technical staff, a new inspector or non-technical support staff.
Review and define the projects and responsibilities of the building department staff
Create and interpret an outline of the basic functions of the building dept., typical procedures and knowledge to process citizen requests, plan submittals and over-the-counter permits
